DegreeWorks FAQs

What is DegreeWorks?
DegreeWorks is a web-based tool to help students and advisors monitor student progress toward completion of a degree or certificate. DegreeWorks shows the degree or certificate requirements and the coursework the student has completed to produce an easy-to-read audit worksheet. Clear checkboxes indicate which requirements have been met.

What is an audit?
A DegreeWorks audit is a review of past, current and "planned" coursework that provides information on completed and outstanding requirements necessary to complete a degree or certificate.

Is DegreeWorks accessible on any computer?
Yes. Access to DegreeWorks is through the web. Anywhere a student or advisor can log in to your MyMassasoit will allow access to DegreeWorks.

Is information confidential?
Yes. Like other processes used through MyMassasoit, DegreeWorks is accessed through a secure username and password. Students, advisors, and selected staff will be able to view the information contained in DegreeWorks.

Who has the ability to access DegreeWorks?
Currently, DegreeWorks is available to a small group of advisors and counselors. We will be granting more access to students and advisors during the Spring 2013 semester.

How current is information in DegreeWorks?
The information in DegreeWorks is refreshed each night. Any changes made during the day (e.g., grade changes or classes added/dropped) will be viewable in DegreeWorks the following day.

What is the “What If” feature?
“What if” is an option on the Audit that allows students to look at how the courses they have taken would apply toward programs other than the one they are currently in. It does not change a major or course history; it just allows students to see how courses would apply if he or she decided to change his/her major.

Can students register for classes in DegreeWorks?
No. DegreeWorks is a snapshot of courses in-progress, planned, and in academic history. Registration is handled through Self-Service Banner in the MyMassasoit portal.

Can students and advisors see how many classes are to fulfill a student’s requirements?
Yes. DegreeWorks is laid out in block format displaying degree and major/program requirements. Look for unchecked boxes to identify requirements that are still needed for completion.

Are grades visible in DegreeWorks?
Yes. Once grades have been processed at the end of the semester, they are viewable in DegreeWorks following the nightly refresh; however, though grades are viewable in MyMassasoit once posted by an instructor, final grades are not available in DegreeWorks until after the final grading period has ended. Courses in-progress are listed with an "IP" grade until final grades are in.

Is there an easy-to-view list of all classes a student has taken?
Yes. On the Worksheets tab, click on the Classes by Term link at the top for a printable list of courses taken at Massasoit as well as transfer courses.

Information on this audit does not appear up-to-date. What could be causing this?
There could be several reasons. One is that DegreeWorks may not have refreshed since a change was made (the information is refreshed nightly). Second, there could be some paperwork that needs to be completed. For example, if a student has completed a change of program with an advisor, it is possible it has not been processed yet. Check with Advisement & Counseling or the Registrar’s Office if an audit does not reflect the correct information.

Can student information be updated in DegreeWorks?
Information cannot be updated through DegreeWorks. To change a program, a student must submit a change of program to Advisement & Counseling. Other information may require something in writing and/or additional documentation to change. Contact the Registrar’s Office for help.

How does a student know what classes to take?
A student’s DegreeWorks audit clearly shows what is needed to meet the various requirements for a degree and major. Requirements not yet completed display the subject and course number for all courses that can be taken to meet that requirement. IMPORTANT FOR STUDENTS: Be sure scheduled classes are shown in the audit as meeting a requirement. Taking classes that show as “Not Applied to Major(s)” will NOT count toward a degree or certificate. Students are encouraged to review their audit and to discuss their plan with an academic advisor.

How does the audit show if a course has a prerequisite?
If a course has a prerequisite there will be an asterisk (*) next to the course number. To see what the prerequisite is for the course, click on it and a course description including the prerequisite will appear in a pop up box.

Where should I go if I have questions about what I see in DegreeWorks?
You should contact your Academic Advisor with any questions about your academic history and your degree requirements.
