About

TRiO SSSP at Massasoit Community College is the only program of its kind at Massasoit.  It was initially funded in 1997.

Mission
The TRiO Student Support Services Program’s mission is to continuously improve the quality and efficiency of services provided in order to maximize the opportunities of eligible students.  The goal of TRiO SSSP is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of its participants and facilitate the process of transition from one level of higher education to the next. TRiO SSSP is designed for students who have the academic potential to succeed but whose background and/or extenuating life circumstances place those students at additional risk of not fulfilling their educational goals.  Our mission will be realized by providing comprehensive support services that assist students in reaching their full potential for learning.

What is TRiO?
Our nation has asserted a commitment to providing educational opportunity for all Americans regardless of race, ethnic background or economic circumstance.  In support of this commitment, Congress established a series of programs to help low-income Americans enter college, graduate and move on to participate more fully in America’s economic and social life.  These programs are funded under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and are referred to as the TRiO Program (initially just three programs).  While student financial aid programs help students overcome financial barriers to higher education, TRiO programs help students overcome class, social and cultural barriers to higher education.

Who is served?
As mandated by Congress, two-thirds of the student served must come from families with incomes under $28,000, where neither parent graduated from college.  More than 2,700 TRiO programs currently service nearly 866,000 low-income Americans.  More program serve students in grades six through 12.  Thirty-seven percent (37%) of TRiO student are White, 35% are African-American, 19% are Hispanic, 4% are Native American, 4% are Asian-American, and 1% report more than one race.  Twenty-two thousand students with disabilities and more than 25,000 United States Veterans are currently enrolled in TRiO programs.
