Mathieu Kassovitz’s contemporary classic offers a hyper realistic portrayal of life in the banlieue. Documenting the 24 hours after a riot lands a friend in intensive care, a trio of young men navigate life on the periphery, wasting time and plotting revenge. Kassovitz’s film sent shockwaves throughout French cinema and society in its treatment of a world beyond the arrondissements. Juxtaposing moments of philosophy and humor against brutality and violence, La Haine’s exploration of institutional violence and the racist legacy of colonialism feels as immediate today as it was 25 years ago.
