About Our Program

The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program is designed for students interested in learning the English language. Massasoit Community College offers a series of ESOL courses in Brockton, MA. Our courses are designed for adult students with varying levels of English speaking ability – from those that speak very little English to those that are conversational and want to master the language.

How the Brockton ESOL program works
Students interested in the Brockton ESOL program are assessed by Massasoit Community College staff during the dates/times listed below. A language assessment is required prior to registration. Based on the assessment results, students are referred to one of seven ESOL courses.

Language Assessment Schedule

Students must be assessed prior to registration.  Assessments are free and offered on a walk-in basis at the Brockton Campus on Thursdays, 5:00 – 7:00 pm:  September 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 in LA562.

Beginner Level, A & B

These courses are designed for students with little or no English ability. The courses focus on basic oral communication and an introduction to reading and writing.

Intermediate Level, A & B

This course level is designed for students with fundamental English ability. Course focus includes oral communication, pronunciation, reading and writing of the English language including grammar, vocabulary building, and introduction to writing.

Advanced Level, A & B

This course level is designed for students with strong English ability. Course focus includes conversation practice, pronunciation, reading and writing of the English language including grammar, vocabulary building, and composition writing.

Transitional ESOL

This 60-hour course is designed to bring students to the level of Massasoit’s college credit ESOL classes. Students who successfully complete this course may register for the first level of college credit ESOL courses in the following semester. This course focuses on speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

Additional Courses

ESOL Conversation, Pronunciation, & Culture

Come practice your English in a fun, relaxed, and informal setting while learning about American customs and culture. This course is designed for beginner to intermediate ESOL students. We will work on basic communication skills and what to do and say in a variety of everyday practical and social situations, such as meeting others, working, traveling, and celebrating holidays. Learn to overcome communication difficulties and improve one's speech pattern in society.

About Our Instructors

Mary Beth Barilla holds a B.A. in English and earned M.A. degrees in both English and TESOL. She also has extensive business experience, having worked in publishing for many years. Mary has been teaching at Massasoit Community College for the past two years.

Kristina Burns, an MCC alum, earned her B.A. in Business Management from the University of Phoenix and her M.A. in TESOL from the University of Southern California. She began teaching at Massasoit in the Fall of 2017. She was the first woman in her family to graduate from college and the only person to hold three degrees in three programs.

Wendy Dameron holds a B.S. in Speech Communication from Syracuse University and an M.Ed. from UMass Boston in Education. She has been teaching ESOL students all over Massachusetts in grades K-12 and to adults for many years. She enjoys collaboration, research, and meeting so many new people in her field of work.

Alison Farah holds a B.A. in Cultural Anthropology and an M.A. in TESOL. She is a licensed French/Latin teacher and holds a Certificate in Early Childhood Education. Alison teaches French and Latin at Silver Lake Middle School. She is also an ESOL Instructor at Massasoit Community College. Alison has worked as an adult language tutor for Arabic/English online and at diverse local centers. Alison has also taught elementary school and theater production overseas.

Fabiola Keller holds a B. A. in Psychology from UMass Boston and an M.A. in Marriage and Family Counseling from Eastern Nazarene College. She has a TESOL certificate and has worked in the education and social work fields for over 20 years.

Celeste Cunningham earned a B.A. in History from the University of Arizona, an M.Ed. in History from UMass Boston, and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies/Leadership from Cambridge College. A lifelong educator, Celeste has worked with many different kinds of students in areas of teaching, advising, motivating, and building success strategies.  She has served at the Community College level for 11 years, teaching History as well as American Government, State and Local Government, Sociology, Speech, First Year Seminar and several

A certificate of completion will be awarded upon successful completion of the course level.
