The TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Program is a program funded by the United States Department of Education.  Under the federal guidelines, students enrolled at Massasoit Community College may be eligible to participate in TRIO SSS if they are first-generation college attendees, low income, or have a documented disability. The goal of the program is to increase retention, graduation, and transfer rates from two-year to four-year institutions by providing an array of comprehensive support services to assist with academic and personal needs.

To receive services in the TRIO Program, you must be:

  • Accepted for enrollment or currently enrolled at Massasoit Community College
  • A U.S. Citizen or registered Permanent Resident
  • Highly motivated to graduate and/or transfer to a four-year college or university.

Students qualify for the program by demonstrating academic need and meeting at least one of the following criteria:

  1. First Generation Student
You are considered a first generation student if neither parent nor guardian graduated with a bachelors degree from a four-year institution. A student raised by only one parent or guardian who did not have a bachelors degree is also considered a first generation student. Even if a parent has an associates degree or lacks only one course for a Bachelor’s degree, the student is still considered a first generation student.
  2. Low Income
Federal guidelines for taxable income set at 1.5 times the national poverty level determine the income status for a student’s family.
  3. Disability
Any student with a learning or physical disability documented with the Access and Disability Resources Office is eligible.

Federal guidelines required two-thirds (2/3) of the participants qualify as low income and first generation, or have a disability. Also, one third (1/3) of the students with disabilities must also be low income status.
