The Massasoit Community English as a Second Language (ESOL) Program is funded by a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). The program addresses the needs of adult learners from other countries to gain English proficiency from Beginner to Advanced levels. Based on individual student needs, our instructors tailor lessons to maximize opportunities for students to attain their life goals.

Classes are held from September to May at both the Massasoit Community College’s Brockton and Canton Campuses. The 34-week long program offers Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced levels of ESOL. Topics include reading, writing, grammar, American Culture & Civics, numeracy, conversation, pronunciation, and computer labs.

Placements are chosen through a lottery system. Interested students must register to be included in the lottery that is held August with a second lottery in December if seats are available for the Spring semester.

All classes and material are offered FREE of charge to students with limited English proficiency. Classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday Evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. Classes are offered in a hybrid model on the Canton Campus and in-person on the Brockton campus.

ESOL Program Frequently Asked Questions

Adult ESOL or English for Speakers of Other Languages is the term used to describe English language instruction for adults who are non-native speakers of English. English as a Second Language or ESL is alternately used in various parts of the United States.

There are 6 levels: Level 1A/1B – Beginners, Level 2A/2B – Intermediate, Level 3A/3B – Advanced. Students spend one year at each level. Upon entering the program, you will be tested and then placed into the corresponding level.

Classes and materials are free. The program is funded by a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (ESE).

We offer in-person classes at the Brockton Campus and a Hybrid model through the Canton Campus. All classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. In the Hybrid model, students are required to attend an in-person session once each month, generally on the first Tuesday of each month. A schedule for in-person sessions will be provided at the beginning of the year.

Due to high demand, the Massasoit Community ESOL program has begun to use a lottery system for a seat in our FREE English classes. The lottery is held twice a year: once in August for the Fall semester, and once in December for the Spring semester if seats are available.
