Free college opens doors at Massasoit Community College
Eligible students benefit from MassEducate and MassReconnect programs
“Having access to Free College has been life-changing for me,” said Nahomie Morency, a criminal justice student at Massasoit Community College. “Because of this program, I have found support not only through my education, but with my fellow students on the Women’s Volleyball Team. I am able to further my education, and I found a community that cares for me as much as I care for them.”
Students are getting help from MassEducate and MassReconnect, state programs helping all Massachusetts residents who have not yet earned a bachelor’s degree, to attend community college for free. Eligible students have their tuition, fees, books, and supplies covered by the state in the form of last dollar financial aid grant awards after all other financial aid and grants are applied.
This spring, Massasoit has seen a 22% bump in enrollment, with larger increases among older populations: +28% for those in their 30s, +37% for those in their 40s, and +55% for those 50 and older.
“For nearly 60 years, Massasoit has provided our students with opportunities to help them on their educational journey,” said Massasoit Interim President Bill Mitchell. “With Free College, we continue to do what we have always done: meet our students where they are and give them the tools to help them succeed.”
