Radiologic Technology Clinical Affiliations

Continuous contact with the clinical site by phone, e-mail, by weekly observation visits and by-semester  Clinical Instructor (CI) meetings, Trajecsys clinical management and tracking system for radiography students and direct immediate access through the college. The Clinical Coordinator approves All clinical assignments, coordinates, function as a Medical Imaging instructor and advisor. Correlates clinical education with didactic education and evaluates its effectiveness. Participates in didactic and/or clinical instruction, supports the program director to help assure effective program operation, Participates in the assessment process, Cooperates with the program director in periodic review and revision of clinical course materials, Maintains current knowledge of the discipline and educational methodologies through continuing professional development, and Maintains current knowledge of program policies, procedures, and student progress.

Responsible for the day to day supervision of the students while they are on a clinical site. Responsibilities of the CI include:

• Scheduling area and room assignments, evaluating, advising and maintaining files for each of the students. Is knowledgeable of program goals,
• Understands the clinical objectives and clinical evaluation system,
• Understands the sequencing of didactic instruction and clinical education,
• Provides students with clinical instruction and supervision,
• Evaluates students’ clinical competence,
• Maintains competency in the professional discipline and instructional and evaluative techniques through continuing professional development, and Maintains current knowledge of program policies, procedures, and student progress Under the guidelines of the Clinical Coordinator.

• Understand the clinical competency system,
• Understand requirements for student supervision,
• Support the educational process, and
• Maintain current knowledge of program policies, procedures, and student progress.

The Clinical Instructors and the Massasoit Director and Coordinator meet once a month during each academic semester. These meetings are designed to afford the clinical affiliates an opportunity to meet and discuss issues, review and refine policies and to assess the effectiveness of the clinical training and evaluation procedures.
Minutes of meeting emailed to the CI’S and are kept on file at the college.

Students placed at a hospital that does not have pediatric facilities will be assigned a short-term rotation at a facility that has pediatric radiology. This will afford them opportunity to complete their pediatric competencies.

Students will rotate through the following areas after all the assigned competencies are done: Cardiac Cath, CT, Interventional/Angiography, MRI, Radiation Therapy, Ultrasound, Elective rotations are usually done during the second year and the availability and length of the rotations are determined by fulfilment of clinical objectives/competencies. Elective rotations are strictly observational, and no patient care is allowed while student is in this rotation.

In the event a student is suspended from a clinical practicum site the situation that resulted in the suspension will be investigated by the Clinical Coordinator and Program Director. If at the conclusion of the investigation it is determined that the student’s suspension from the site was for valid reasons, or in the event of a suspension for valid reasons where the clinical site refuses to allow the student to return to the site following a clinical suspension, the Program and the College are under no obligation to assign that student to a different clinical site.

The suspended student has the right to initiate an appeal through the Programs College’s due process as outlined in the Programs Handbook and Massasoit Student Radiography Handbook. The results of the appeal process will determine the student’s future status in the program and clinical placement.

Oversees and provide leadership to carry out the academic and clinical instruction and to assure the educational curriculum is consistent with radiography practices, trends and accreditation standards. Provide for ongoing evaluation of the program, guidance to faculty, advise students Participates in budget planning. Participate in and/or present courses of instruction. Perform other related duties relative to the Radiography program purpose and mission. Maintains current knowledge of the professional discipline and educational methodologies through continuing professional development.
