Please save the date for our Evening of Champions President’s Reception at Massasoit Community College.
Join us to honor this year’s Education and Community Champion, John Yazwinski. John is the President and CEO of Father Bill’s & MainSpring, a leading organization helping to end homelessness in our region. We are proud to recognize a leader and organization whose work is aligned with our mission to support and uplift our students and community.
Our fifth-annual Evening of Champions will be held on Wednesday, May 13, 2026 on our Brockton Campus. See below for information on Sponsorship Levels. More information and details will be available soon.

John Yazwinski is the President & CEO of Father Bill’s & MainSpring (FBMS), a nonprofit organization serving individuals and families experiencing or at risk of homelessness across Southern Massachusetts. His connection to this work began more than 30 years ago, when he started on the front lines as a shelter intern, gaining firsthand experience with the challenges facing people without stable housing. In 1999, John became Executive Director of the Quincy Interfaith Sheltering Coalition (QISC) and later became President & CEO of FBMS after overseeing the merger of QISC and the MainSpring Sheltering Coalition in 2007, bringing together two long-standing community organizations to strengthen and coordinate the region’s response to homelessness.
Today, FBMS provides emergency shelter to hundreds of individuals and families each night, operates more than 800 supportive housing units, and works alongside communities to create effective, long-term solutions.
A hallmark of John’s leadership has been guiding a strategic shift in how communities address homelessness. Working closely with local partners, FBMS developed Housing Resource Centers in Brockton and Quincy, with another proposed for Plymouth. These centers reflect a more proactive, community-based approach—focusing on homelessness prevention and diversion, rapid re-housing, and supportive housing for the most vulnerable members of the community. By emphasizing early intervention and coordinated support, the Housing Resource Center model has been recognized by business and community leaders as a national model in the fight to end homelessness.
Over the past two decades, John has built and sustained partnerships with public and private organizations to expand housing opportunities across Southern Massachusetts. Through these collaborations, FBMS has pursued creative housing solutions by repurposing existing community assets—including former hotels, a Title V federal surplus property, and other underutilized buildings—into supportive housing. FBMS’s housing portfolio, in which 99% of tenants remain housed for at least one year, includes the Roadway Apartments in Brockton, the first hotel-to-housing conversion project in Massachusetts designed for individuals experiencing homelessness.
In addition to his work at FBMS, John serves on the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Housing & Shelter Alliance and on Governor Maura Healey’s Extremely Low-Income (ELI) Commission, helping advance strategies to expand deeply affordable housing across the Commonwealth. He also previously served on the Governor’s Housing Advisory Council, contributing to the state’s comprehensive housing plan.
Massasoit Community College encourages persons with disabilities to participate in its programs and activities. If you anticipate needing any type of accommodation or have questions related to access for this event, please contact College Advancement in advance of your participation or visit.

Brockton Area Branch NAACP and President Phyllis Ellis
The Brockton Area Branch NAACP and long-time President Phyllis Ellis were recognized as this year’s “Community Champion” for their service to the community and Massasoit. With roots dating back to the 1920s, the Brockton Area Branch has long been an advocate for the protection of civil rights in our community. Formally established in the 1950s, the branch has played an active role in making public housing available to low-income people in Brockton, fostering youth development, and encourages students to stay in school, promotes equal access to jobs and business opportunities, registers and encourages people to vote. Ellis is now serving her fourth term as president of the Brockton Area Branch. She is chair of the ACT-SO Committee. She is also active outside of her work for the Brockton NAACP, serving as chair of the Mayor’s Community Justice Task Force and Commissioner for the Plymouth County Status of Women.
Chris Cooney, President and CEO of the Metro South Chamber; Peter Forman, President and CEO of the South Shore Chamber
Peter Forman, President and CEO of the South Shore Chamber, and Chris Cooney, President and CEO of the Metro South Chamber, were recognized as this year’s “Champions of Education” for their support of the College and its mission. The mission of chambers are, to convene, engage and take thoughtful action, often benefits many more than those who are counted among their members. Leading Chambers of Commerce are catalysts in creating stronger opportunities for students and all residents in the regions we collectively serve. Massasoit Community College is fortunate to have particularly close relations with two of the leading Chambers of Commerce in Massachusetts. The Metro South and the South Shore Chambers have been long-time leaders in promoting stronger communities and greater economic opportunities all along the Route 24 and Route 3 corridors. They have been important partners helping to amplify the college’s impact beyond campus and into the broader community.

In 1996, he established the Marvelous Marvin Hagler Scholarship Fund, which supports Massasoit students demonstrating a financial need who live in Brockton. Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro South
Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro South was formed in 2019 through the merger of the Boys & Girls Club of Brockton (founded in 1990) and the Boys & Girls Club of Taunton (founded in 1902) in order to maximize impact and bridge service gaps in our region. Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro South (BGCMS) is fueled by a mission “to nurture strong minds, healthy bodies and community spirit through youth-driven, high-impact programming in safe and fun environments” to ensure that every child has a positive place to spend their out-of-school-time hours. Through a combination of afterschool, weekend, and summer camp programs BGCMS serves boys and girls ages 5 to 18 at its Brockton and Taunton Clubhouses, Camp Riverside property, and at several extension sites throughout Southeastern Massachusetts. Every day, BGCMS is helping youth build great futures for themselves, their families, and their communities.
