Philosophy

When people hear the term workforce development, they often think only about job training or preparing individuals for employment. While those are important components, workforce development is much broader. It is the intentional development of human potential by creating education and training opportunities that align with high-demand industries, engaging employers and community stakeholders, and strengthening the economic vitality of our communities.

At the Future of Work Institute, we believe workforce development begins long before someone enrolls in a training program or applies for a job. It begins with understanding people. To effectively prepare individuals for careers, we must first understand the specialized populations we serve, the communities they live in, and the barriers they face to accessing education, training, and employment. These barriers may include housing instability, transportation, childcare, justice involvement, language access, financial insecurity, mental health, digital literacy, or simply a lack of awareness about available opportunities.

This is why the Future of Work Institute invests in and promotes community engagement initiatives that may not appear, at first glance, to be directly connected to employment. Events focused on health and wellness, cultural awareness, civic engagement, youth development, financial literacy, leadership, justice-impacted populations, veterans, foster youth, and community dialogue are all part of workforce development because they help create the conditions in which individuals can thrive. By strengthening communities and addressing the social and economic factors that influence educational and career success, we are building a stronger talent pipeline for the future.

Our work recognizes that workforce development cannot occur in isolation. It requires collaboration among educational institutions, employers, workforce boards, government agencies, community-based organizations, and residents themselves. Together, these partnerships identify workforce needs, advocate for equitable access to opportunity, and develop innovative solutions that promote both individual economic mobility and regional economic development.

At its core, the Future of Work Institute is not simply preparing people for today's jobs, we are helping individuals develop the knowledge, confidence, support systems, and opportunities they need to succeed throughout their careers while strengthening the communities in which they live and work. We believe that investing in people is the foundation of investing in the workforce, and that meaningful workforce development starts with human development.

Mission

The Institute serves as the “think-tank” space for the College, community, and industry partners to identify targeted strategies that address workforce challenges, trends, and opportunities to build the pipeline for the workforce of tomorrow through:

• Identifying and Assessing Best Practices
  • The Institute aims to stay at the forefront of industry demand by researching and adopting best practices regionally and nationally. This ensures that the programs offered by the College are competitive and effective in addressing current and future workforce challenges.
• Developing Innovative Programs
  • To meet the dynamic needs of the workforce, the Institute focuses on creating regional industry partnerships and designing initiatives that bridge the gap between education and industry requirements.
• Serving as an Institutional Liaison
  • The Institute advances the common goals between the College and external entities. Its function is to ensure that the College’s programs are aligned with the broader strategic goals at the regional, state, and national level.

   Support youth aging out of systems and justice-impacted individuals through inclusive programs, credential-based learning, and wraparound services that reduce barriers to opportunity.
