1098-T
Each January, Massasoit issues IRS Form 1098-T to eligible students who paid qualified tuition and related expenses during the prior calendar year. This form may assist with claiming education-related tax credits.
The 1098-T is an informational IRS form for students enrolled in higher education. It reports:
- Box 1: Total payments received for qualified tuition and related expenses
- Box 5: Scholarships or grants received
It may also reflect adjustments to prior years or other tax-relevant information.
You will not receive a form if:
- Your qualified charges were fully covered by scholarships, grants, or third-party payments
- You did not make any reportable payments during the tax year
- You were enrolled only in noncredit or non-degree courses
Even if you don’t receive a paper form, the information may still be available electronically.
Forms are mailed to students’ home addresses by January 31 each year. For earlier access:
- Through MyMassasoit: Log in, go to Student Self-Service, and select 1098-T Tax Notification from the left-hand menu
- Through Maximus Student Portal: Visit tra.maximus.com and complete a one-time registration using your student information. Once registered, you can securely access current and prior-year forms online
The 1098-T helps you or your tax preparer determine eligibility for education-related tax benefits. Keep in mind:
- Box 1 reflects payments made during the calendar year, not charges billed
- You may not receive a form if you don’t meet IRS reporting requirements
- Receiving a 1098-T does not guarantee eligibility for a credit
Massasoit cannot provide personalized tax advice. For assistance, visit IRS 1098-T page or consult a qualified tax professional.
The 1098-T form may help you or your tax preparer determine eligibility for federal education tax credits, such as the American Opportunity Credit or the Lifetime Learning Credit. These credits are based on the amount of qualified tuition and related expenses you paid during the tax year.
For details, visit the IRS Education Credits page.
Who receives a 1098-T?
Students who made reportable payments toward qualified tuition and related expenses. Students whose costs were fully covered or who were enrolled only in noncredit programs may not receive a form.
What does Box 1 show?
Total payments received for qualified tuition and related expenses during the calendar year.
Why is Box 2 blank?
Box 2 is no longer used. The IRS requires schools to report payments received (Box 1), not amounts billed.
What does Box 5 include?
Scholarships and grants applied to qualified tuition and related expenses. This may impact your eligibility for tax credits.
What if I didn’t receive a form?
Check online via MyMassasoit or Maximus. If no form appears and you believe one should have been issued, contact Student Accounts.
Why doesn’t my form match my bill?
The form reflects payments received in the calendar year—not by semester. Payments made in December for spring classes may appear on the prior year’s form.
Does receiving a 1098-T mean I qualify for a tax credit?
Not necessarily. The form is informational and doesn’t determine eligibility. Consult a tax professional to evaluate your situation.
Can Massasoit help me complete my taxes?
No. Staff are not permitted to provide personal tax advice. For help, contact the IRS or a qualified tax preparer.
