Honors Students Hold Spring Conference

May 2, 2016 – Massasoit Community College’s Canton Campus held their spring honors conference on Wednesday, April 27. The event, which highlighted projects by students in the Commonwealth Honors Program on the Canton Campus, drew sixty students, faculty, and staff to the display in the Akillian Gallery.

Four students were on hand to receive $500 scholarship awards and be congratulated by Massasoit President Dr. Charles Wall, Nick Palantzas, senior vice president and vice president of the Canton Campus and college advancement, and Vice President of Academic Affairs Barbara McCarthy.

Scholarship winners were:

Lucas Choute, Daniel Coyne, Nicole Mendes-Bynum, and Teena-Marie Sorrenti.

Following the awarding of the scholarships, Michael Moses and Ken Lee Mercury, both students in Professor David LaFontaine’s English Comp II Honors class in Canton, presented their research on short stories in James Joyce’s Dubliners.

Finally, Professor Suzanne Morris, who teachers the Honors Seminar in Canton, shared the story of her personal journey. She graduated from the Commonwealth Honors Program at Massasoit in 2010 and is now an instructor in the Honors Program.

Honors students on the Brockton Campus held their honors conference on Wednesday, May 4, and included 42 presentations on a variety of topics, including national security, industrial farming, the space program, and English literature.

The mission of the Commonwealth Honors Program at Massasoit is to create enriched educational opportunities for academically talented and highly motivated students; to encourage the recognition of these students as an integral part of our college community; to encourage faculty to mentor these students; to assist in the transfer of these students to four-year colleges and universities appropriate to their needs; and to provide opportunities for independent study as well as small peer classes for students who can work above the collegiate norm to develop individual skills.
