April 21, 2022 – Brockton – The Massasoit Community College Foundation will host its inaugural “Evening of Champions” on Saturday, May 21 at 6:00 p.m. to benefit its Marvelous Marvin Hagler Memorial Scholarship. The event will posthumously honor Hagler, a longtime supporter of Massasoit, and The Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro South as a champion of education in the community. Former Boston Celtics Champion Cedric Maxwell will be in attendance and deliver the evening’s keynote address.

“This event was planned with members of the Hagler family to help keep his memory alive and ensure that his commitment to education through service and philanthropy is remembered,” said Massasoit President Ray DiPasquale.

Hagler was a member of the Massasoit Board of Trustees and established the Marvelous Marvin Hagler Memorial Scholarship fund for students many years ago. The scholarship awards amounts ranging from $500 to $2,000 to students who demonstrate financial need.

In 2016, during a small ceremony where Hagler personally awarded the scholarship to two Massasoit students, he remarked, “All I can do is give you a helping hand, then it’s up to you to make this happen. Education opens doors and opportunity is waiting for you. Dreams will come true if you believe in yourself. Never give up!”

The Evening of Champions promises to be one to remember. Tickets are $125 per person and include a beer and wine reception, hors d’oeuvres, food stations, carving stations, and there will be special offerings from the Brockton Beer Company. Cocktail attire is recommended. Guests can purchase a ticket for a VIP reception and meet & greet with Maxwell for an additional $50 per person. There will also be a wine pull and silent auction; sponsorship opportunities and program listing options are available. Award-winning journalist and broadcaster Jimmy Myers will be the evening’s emcee.

Each year, Massasoit will honor an individual and organizational “Champion of Education” in the community. This year, we posthumously recognize Marvelous Marvin Hagler as the individual and The Boys & Girls Club of Metro South for their outstanding contributions to education and helping to change lives in local communities.

“Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro South is extremely honored by this recognition from Massasoit Community College. Education is the cornerstone of our after-school programs in Brockton and Taunton, and we work to provide all of our members with high-quality programming that is safe, fun, and makes a measurable difference, with an ultimate goal of imparting to them the skills needed to achieve success in the 21st century. For many of our kids, Massasoit is their first stop after high school and en route to their future careers. Together, we play a critical role in creating equitable pathways to higher education and we are eager to continue and expand our longtime partnership,” said Derek Heim, president & CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro South.

An Evening of Champions will be held at the Student Center on Massasoit’s Brockton campus (1 Massasoit Blvd) and all guests must comply with the college’s COVID-19 safety requirements.
