Kane Smego Keynotes Student Leadership Conference
March 11, 2016 – On Friday, March 4, Massasoit Community College hosted keynote speaker Kane Smego at the annual Student Senate Leadership Conference.
A spoken word artist, writer, and youth educator from Durham, North Carolina, Smego spoke to the 85 students in attendance about “Crossing the Lines of Difference.” In addition to the keynote address, students attended breakout sessions with topics ranging from diversity to public speaking.
“Our Student Senate really came together to plan and execute this outstanding event,” said Kathleen Reid, director of student life. “You could really feel the energy in the room.”
Kane Smego graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2010 with Highest Honors and a bachelor’s degree in Spanish. Due to his high achievement in college he was awarded the Sterling A. Stoudemire Chancellor’s Award for being the top Spanish student in his graduating class.
Smego is the founder of Poetic Justice, an after school program focused on teaching spoken word and hip hop education to at-risk and underserved youth in Durham, NC. Recently he was selected to participate in Next Level, a hip hop education project headed by the U.S State department and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
