Massasoit Awarded $20,000 Grant from Lloyd G. Balfour Foundation

Aug. 7, 2017 – Massasoit Community College has been awarded a $20,000 grant from the Lloyd G. Balfour Foundation for the 2017-2018 academic year. Grant funding will support Massasoit’s Latch Academic Support Program.

“Massasoit’s Latch Program has helped thousands of students succeed. We are very proud of the model which was the idea of some of our faculty nearly 40 years ago. This grant will help us to continue to support our students,” said Dr. Charles Wall, president of Massasoit Community College.

Latch is a one- to two-semester academic support and learning community that serves a diverse population of students who are looking for support as they transition into college and develop their reading, writing, mathematics, and study skills. For 40 years, Latch’s community approach to education has helped students establish successful independent learning strategies and set realistic academic and career goals. The Latch program offers intensive academic and career counseling, peer and professional tutoring, peer mentoring, and civic engagement opportunities that together have been proven to bolster at-risk student success. Latch’s research-based approach has helped students overcome myriad educational disadvantages. The grant will help fund tutoring and mentoring to students.
