On October 14, 2015, Massasoit Community College held a ceremony outside of the student center honoring James Barrows for his years of dedication to Massasoit. In lieu of the traditional Massasoit Chair generally given to trustees, a tree was planted in his honor.

A 1977 graduate of Massasoit, Jim served two five-year terms on the Board of Trustees, including as its chair in 2010-2011. He currently serves as the Associate Director of Community Relations at Harvard University. A Duxbury resident, he holds a bachelor’s degree from Amherst College.

“Jim served Massasoit with distinction during his tenure on the Board,” said Dr. Charles Wall, president of Massasoit Community College. “All of our trustees serve us ably, but Jim, as a graduate and former student athlete, has a deep, personal sense of how our mission affects our students. We are proud to have honored him in a way that will always live on at our campus.”

Jim had the tree dedicated to his mother and father, James and Inez Barrows, whom he said “instilled the value of hard work and education in [him] as a child.” His mother and family members joined him for the ceremony. “This is where it all started for me. This is where I got my foundation. All of you here today that work at Massasoit, and everyone, if you know someone who isn’t sure of their path, who thinks college is not for them, tell them about Massasoit. I was one of those kids and Massasoit changed my life.”
