Massasoit Students Awarded Hagler Scholarships
Aug. 22, 2016 – The recipients of the Massasoit Community College Marvelous Marvin Hagler Scholarship Awards were announced in a small ceremony on Friday afternoon, August 19, at the Massasoit Conference Center. Marvelous Marvin Hagler presented scholarships to two incoming students, Andrea Malin and Schona Riley. Attendees and speakers included David Offutt, Bonnie Blackler, and Christopher Blunt, members of the Massasoit Community College Board of Trustees; Steve Murphy, director of advancement; Nick Palantzas, senior vice president and vice president of the Canton Campus and College Advancement; and Kevin Walsh, president of the Massasoit Community College Foundation. Other Foundation Board attendees included Charlie Tartaglia, Bob Anzalone, and Joe Moses.
Andrea Malin, an Army veteran and resident of Wareham, is a Liberal Arts Transfer student who hopes to soon enroll in a nursing program. Schona Riley is a Liberal Arts Transfer – Science student from Brockton. Each student will receive two years of full tuition and fees up to $14,000 to complete their educations at Massasoit.
Applicants for the scholarship submitted an application and a 250-word essay about themselves. To be eligible, applicants needed to have a 3.0 GPA from their most recent educational institution and demonstrate financial need. Each awardee must maintain a GPA of 3.0 while enrolled full-time at Massasoit to continue receiving the scholarship.
Massasoit Community College trustee David Offutt addressed Mr. Hagler, saying, “As a former trustee of the College, you know the great impact we can have and that our responsibility is huge. We appreciate you; this is awesome! On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we thank you!”
Marvelous Marvin Hagler, the former middle-weight boxing champion of the world, added, “All I can do is give you a helping hand, then it’s up to you to make this happen. Education opens doors and opportunity is waiting for you. Dreams will come true if you believe in yourself. Never give up!”
