Massasoit to Host 14th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration

Jan. 20, 2016 – Massasoit Community College’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion will host the 14th annual celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Wednesday, February 3, 2016.

The event will feature keynote speaker Lani Guinier, Bennett Boskey Professor of Law at Harvard University. Professor Guinier was the first woman of color appointed to a tenured professorship at the Harvard Law School.

The author of many books and articles on race and gender, Professor Guinier also served in the Civil Rights Division at the U.S. Department of Justice and headed the voting rights project at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. The recipient of ten honorary degrees, Professor Guinier has also been honored with the Harvey Levin Teaching Award from the graduating class at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, and the Sacks-Freund Award for Teaching Excellence from Harvard Law School.

“Professor Lani Guinier is a leader in the fields of social justice and civil rights, and we look forward to welcoming her to Massasoit Community College,” said Dr. Charles Wall, president of Massasoit Community College.

The College’s annual celebration commemorates Dr. King’s legacy by bringing together faculty, staff, students, and the community for discussion and reflection.

The celebration, which will kick off Massasoit’s recognition of Black History Month, will be held on the Brockton Campus in the Anna P. Buckley Performing Arts Center Large Theater from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
