About Our Program

The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program is designed for students interested in learning the English language. Massasoit Community College offers a series of ESOL courses in Brockton, MA. Our courses are designed for adult students with varying levels of English speaking ability – from those that speak very little English to those that are conversational and want to master the language.

How the Brockton ESOL program works
Students interested in the Brockton ESOL program are assessed by Massasoit Community College staff during the dates/times listed below. A language assessment is required prior to registration. Based on the assessment results, students are referred to one of eight ESOL courses.

Language Assessment Schedule
Students must be assessed prior to registration. Assessments are free and offered at the Brockton Campus on Thursdays, at 5:00 PM January 12,19,26, and February 2, 2023 in Room LA559.

Note: Students must be fully vaccinated in order to register. Please bring your vaccination card to your assessment.

Beginner Level, A & B

These courses are designed for students with little or no English ability. The courses focus on basic oral communication and an introduction to reading and writing.

About Our Instructor(s)

Dianne Blanchard holds a B.S. in Sociology and Social Welfare from Bridgewater State University. She began her career in the Adult Education field in 2004 as a substitute teacher for an ESOL/ABE program and immediately fell in love with the students and the program’s mission. Dianne has been teaching various levels of ESOL since 2005 and was also the Career Advisor and Data Entry Specialist for the Massasoit Stoughton ESOL Program and the Transitions Program. In addition to teaching and advising, she has done many Workforce Development assignments throughout her ESOL/ABE career.

Stephanie Castellarin holds a B.A. in Foreign Languages from Bridgewater State University.  She is fluent in Portuguese and Spanish. She worked abroad for several years teaching English in South America and worked as an interpreter in hospitals and courts in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In 2020, she was federally appointed as an interpreter and translator for the U.S. Census Bureau.  Stephanie has been teaching at Massasoit Community College for the past two years.

Celeste Cunningham earned a B.A. in History from the University of Arizona, an M.Ed. in History from UMass Boston, and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies/Leadership from Cambridge College. A lifelong educator, Celeste has worked with many different kinds of students in areas of teaching, advising, motivating, and building success strategies.  She has served at the Community College level for 11 years, teaching History as well as American Government, State and Local Government, Sociology, Speech, First Year Seminar and several

Mary Beth Barilla holds a B.A. in English from the University of North Carolina and earned M.A. degrees in both English and TESOL from Indiana University. She also has extensive business experience, having worked in publishing for many years.  Mary has been teaching at Massasoit Community College for the past two years.

Certificate of Completion

A certificate of completion will be awarded upon successful completion of the course level.
