Massasoit Student Researchers Present Powerful and Thought-Provoking Work on Global Student Equity at Regional Education Conference

On May 5, 2025, student researchers from Massasoit Community College delivered a powerful and inspiring presentation at the Teaching, Learning, and Student Development Conference hosted by Bristol Community College. The presentation, titled “Community College Students as Participatory Action Co-Researchers (PAR): Engaging in Innovative, Meaningful, and Student-Led Approaches to Enhance Student Success,” was officially shared with the broader community.

Led by Principal Investigator Dr. Tara Gully-Hightower, the student-led Participatory Action Research (PAR) team explored equity gaps faced by Global Students, defined as international, immigrant, undocumented, and English language learner (ELL) students. Drawing on critical theory, lived experience, and qualitative research methods, the student co-researchers identified systemic barriers and proposed solutions aimed at fostering inclusive student success.

Their research findings revealed significant inequities in support services, financial aid access, and campus inclusion for Global Students, many of whom are students of color from countries historically impacted by colonization. In response, the PAR team presented a comprehensive recommendation for the creation of a dedicated Global Student Center.

As of the date of the presentation, the student-led advocacy efforts have led to real change: the new Global Student Center at Massasoit Community College has officially opened and is now serving students. The Center provides a centralized, multilingual resource hub tailored to the unique needs of Global Students and will also serve as a cultural training space for faculty and staff.

This presentation underscores the transformative potential of student-led research and the importance of creating institutional structures that are co-developed with the students they aim to support.
