Marvelous Marvin Hagler (1954-2021) was an American boxer. He held the title of undisputed middleweight champion from 1980 to 1987, earning recognition for his impressive knockout record. In 1982, he legally changed his name to “Marvelous Marvin Hagler.” Inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1993, Hagler received numerous accolades, including Fighter of the Year and Fighter of the Decade in the 1980s.

Hagler’s impact extended beyond the boxing ring. He served on the Massasoit Community College Board of Trustees from 1986 to 1991 and actively supported Massasoit students during his tenure. In 1996, he established the Marvelous Marvin Hagler Scholarship Fund, which supports Massasoit students demonstrating a financial need who live in Brockton. Due to his dedication to the College, our students and community, Hagler became the first honoree posthumously for Massasoit’s newly established Evening of Champions in 2022.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro South was formed in 2019 through the merger of the Boys & Girls Club of Brockton (founded in 1990) and the Boys & Girls Club of Taunton (founded in 1902) in order to maximize impact and bridge service gaps in our region. Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro South (BGCMS) is fueled by a mission “to nurture strong minds, healthy bodies and community spirit through youth-driven, high-impact programming in safe and fun environments” to ensure that every child has a positive place to spend their out-of-school-time hours. The Clubs hold an intrinsic belief that every child deserves an equal chance to pursue the American Dream, to have a genuine opportunity to realize their full potential – to achieve a Great Future. Through a combination of afterschool, weekend, and summer camp programs BGCMS serves boys and girls ages 5 to 18 at its Brockton and Taunton Clubhouses, Camp Riverside property, and at several extension sites throughout Southeastern Massachusetts. The Clubs provide an affordable, accessible, safe, and enriching place where boys and girls can just be kids. Critically, annual memberships cost just $35 and no child is ever turned away due to inability to pay. The Clubs play a crucial role in intercepting generational cycles by inspiring our boys and girls, raising expectations, and providing them with opportunities for educational support to ensure that they can succeed, regardless of their life circumstances. Every day, BGCMS is helping youth build great futures for themselves, their families, and their communities.
