Health Sciences Division

The Division of Health Sciences offers three degree and seven certificate programs that are all designed to prepare students for a career in specific health care occupations. Job prospects for healthcare professionals are at an all-time high, and Massasoit is committed to graduating students who are expertly trained and prepared to work in a variety of settings, including, but not limited to: hospitals, long-term care facilities, rehabilitative care facilities, and clinics.

Departments

Dental Assistants work in dental offices, helping to treat and examine patients. They assist by handing the dentist the proper instruments, taking and processing x-rays, preparing materials for making impressions and restorations, and instructing the patient in oral health care.

Department Chair

Medical Assistants perform administrative and clinical tasks. The duties vary depending on office location, size, and specialty. Administrative duties may include answering telephones, greeting patients, scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, and completing insurance forms. Clinical duties may include obtaining medical histories from patients, recording vital signs, preparing patients for examinations, and assisting the physician during examinations. Medical Assistants may also collect and prepare laboratory specimens, sterilize instruments, and perform venipunctures and EKGs.

This two-year program prepares its graduates for a variety of rewarding careers in the field of nursing. Upon successful completion of the program, the graduate is awarded an Associate in Science degree and is eligible to take the NCLEX-RN examination to become licensed as a registered nurse. Those graduates wishing to continue their education and earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing can enter any of a number of area four-year colleges and universities and can usually complete this process within two additional years.

The Respiratory Care Department focuses on the development and implementation of the Respiratory Care Associate in Science degree. The department and associated courses are primarily located on the Brockton campus with clinical affiliates (i.e., training sites) located at healthcare facilities throughout the surrounding area.
