Degree & Certificate Programs

Program Details

The Radiologic Technology Program is a 21-month, competency-based program, preparing students for entry-level careers as radiographers in a variety of clinical settings. Accreditation has been granted by the Joint Committee on Education in Radiology Technology (JRCERT). Students who successfully complete the approved course of study are then eligible to apply for examination by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).

The Radiologic Technology program is a selective and highly competitive admissions program. All applicants are reviewed by a committee using the rubrics to ensure fair and ethical selection practices.

Upon completion of the Radiologic Technology program, students should be able to apply principles of radiographic exposure with knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and positioning to determine the best demonstration of anatomical structures.

The technologist is also responsible for the care, protection, and comfort of the patient. Additional responsibilities include the ongoing monitoring of equipment safety and quality. This requires a level of professional judgment that necessitates quality academic and clinical training. Radiologic technologists are employed by hospitals, clinics, and private contractors.

Radiologic technologists are integral members of the health care profession. With recent advances in imaging technology, radiographers could broaden their professional opportunities in a variety of diagnostic modalities.

Students must be formally admitted into the Radiologic Technology program to take Radiologic Technology concentration courses. Radiology courses are sequential and must be completed in order. Admission to the program is selective and highly competitive.

Graduates earn an Associate in Science Degree.

Additional Information

The 4 credit “Biological Principles” course is a prerequisite for Anatomy and Physiology I and II. For additional information see information on “How to Apply” in the General Program Information page

Classes may be completed prior to applying for the Radiologic Technology Program. It is strongly urged that students complete these prerequisite classes which are used in the Rubric prior to applying. If a student wishes to take prerequisite courses first, applying into a Liberal Arts Associate Degree Program to do so is a good option.

Priority consideration is given to students who apply with Anatomy and Physiology I&II, English I&II, General Psychology or Principles of Sociology and College Algebra or higher with a grade of “B” or better.

Students contemplating a career in Radiology must be aware that if they have ever been convicted by a court of law, their records will be subject to review by the ARRT examination board.

Program Outcomes

The Massasoit Community College Radiologic Technology Program evaluates student learning and program effectiveness through measurable outcomes that reflect the knowledge, skills, and professional behaviors expected of entry-level radiographers. The program uses assessment data to monitor student achievement, identify areas for improvement, and maintain the quality and effectiveness of the program.

The following outcomes were adapted from JCERT Competencies. Upon completion of the Radiologic Technology Program, students will be able to:

  1. Clinical Competence: Students will demonstrate clinical competence by accurately performing radiographic procedures, applying appropriate positioning and technical factors, producing diagnostic-quality images, and consistently applying radiation protection principles in accordance with ALARA.
  2. Critical Thinking and Problem Solving: Students will demonstrate critical-thinking and problem-solving skills by evaluating radiographic images for diagnostic quality, recognizing and correcting technical errors, and adapting procedures appropriately for trauma, non-routine, and diverse patient conditions.
  3. Communication: Students will demonstrate effective verbal, nonverbal, and written communication when interacting with patients, families, physicians, and members of the healthcare team.
  4. Professionalism: Students will demonstrate professional and ethical behavior by providing compassionate patient care, maintaining confidentiality, demonstrating accountability and dependability, adhering to professional standards, and recognizing the importance of lifelong learning and professional development.
